Before opening The Young Group in 1999, Karen was Vice President of Marketing, Advertising, Product Development and Sales Promotion for Lancôme. Prior to that, she spent seventeen years at Estée Lauder, where she held a variety of executive positions, including Executive Director of Color Cosmetics.
Karen is an active board member of Fashion Group International. She is a certified personal trainer and nutritionist. Karen divides her time between New York and Paris, where The Young Group also has an office.
Since opening The Young Group, Karen has worked extensively in all categories of the cosmetic industry. She has developed concepts and products for RoC, Bath and Body Works, Neutrogena, e.l.f, Vichy and Oribe. Karen has worked on numerous established brands in the beauty category, including Christian Dior Beauté, Shiseido, Bumble & bumble, Dove and Paula’s Choice.
Karen is an adjunct professor at The Fashion Institute of Technology, teaching Product Development in the Master’s program in Cosmetic & Fragrance Marketing and Management.

Krystina has been involved in over 200 product launches in her career, drawing upon her interactions with in-market product and packaging as both a Beauty Consumer and a Professional to provide insight into innovations for the future. Currently, Krystina serves as the Senior Packaging Development Manager with Versed Skin working to create functional, safe, innovative and eco-conscious packaging from beginning to end. Prior to Versed Skin, Krystina began her career as Day Spa owner and Licensed Esthetician of Bella by Krys Day Spa before she transitioned into a development role with COOLA and Bare Republic Sunscreen as an Assistant to the PD Manager. After a lot of hard work and a passion for packaging, she was promoted to their Senior Packaging Engineer role spearheading and managing all aspects of packaging for both brands. During business school, Dan was shocked to learn that the beauty and personal care industry holds more than double the ratio of excess inventory compared to other consumer goods, yet also faces high stockout rates. As a result, Dan incubated Shypyard at the Harvard Innovation Lab. Shypyard provides a software platform to help indie beauty brands with supply chain planning, thereby promoting cash-efficient growth and reducing environmental impacts of brands’ supply chain. Outside of his day job, Dan enjoys interviewing and learning from beauty entrepreneurs and executives on his podcast, Behind the Brand.

Most recently she has focused on sustainability communications helping to drive transparency in corporate communications through precise use of language and statistics, reducing the prevalence of greenwashing. With over 20 years of CPG experience, from Fortune 500 companies to small startups, Akemi’s experience ranges from product development to sourcing and supply chain transformation. Akemi has run chemical procurement at The Clorox Company, formulation and fragrance development at method, and was most recently VP of Product at J.R. Watkins, overseeing development, quality, regulatory compliance, claim support, and third-party manufacturing oversight for hand care, personal care, home care, and OTC remedies. She now heads up the Independent Beauty Association’s (IBA) global supply chain and sustainability programming, supporting small to medium-sized businesses in the beauty and personal care sector. Akemi holds a B.A. in Chemistry from Rutgers University and a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles.

Sam is a former machine learning and software engineer with a strong background in retail technology. He used to work at Facebook Marketplace, collaborating closely with major e-commerce platforms like Shopify and BigCommerce. Sam later started his own Shopify store and founded a successful Shopify app, which became one of the top 100 apps on the Shopify App store.  Sam’s experiences in building retail systems and managing e-commerce stores have shown him how tedious and time-consuming a lot of retail operations are for a typical merchant, especially around managing inventories. These insights inspired him to co-found Shypyard, with the mission to become the next generation inventory planning and forecasting tool for independent beauty brands.  Shypyard aims to merge the power of AI with client’s business acumen to unlock cash from excess inventory and increase gross margins.
